Gear I actually use β tested, not guessed.
I only recommend gear I’ve personally used in my own garden. No filler lists, no Amazon affiliate dumps. If it’s on this page, I’ve tested it and believe in it.
Raised Beds β My Top Pick
VegoGarden Modular Metal Raised Beds
After testing several brands, VegoGarden is the one I keep coming back to. The galvanized steel is thick, the panels lock together without tools, and they look great. I’ve had mine through multiple seasons with zero issues.
They’re not the cheapest option, but they’re built to last 20+ years β which makes them the best value over time.

Soil & Amendments
Mel’s Mix
The classic raised bed soil formula: 1/3 compost, 1/3 peat moss or coco coir, 1/3 coarse vermiculite. Easy to make yourself, drains well, and produces excellent results. I’ve used variations of this for years.
Worm Castings
Best slow-release fertilizer I’ve found. Add a handful per plant at planting time and again mid-season. Completely safe, no burn risk, and the plants love it.
Tools
Hori Hori Knife
Single most useful tool in my shed. Digs, cuts roots, divides plants, measures depth. Get a quality one β cheap versions bend. The Nisaku is the one I use.
CobraHead Weeder
Best hand weeder I’ve tried, period. The curved blade gets under tap roots without disturbing surrounding plants. Especially useful in a raised bed where you’re working in tight spaces.
Watering
Drip Irrigation
If you do one upgrade to your raised bed setup, make it drip irrigation. Water goes directly to the roots, you lose nothing to evaporation, and you can connect it to a timer and essentially automate your watering. I use a basic kit from Amazon β the brand matters less than getting it done.
